A Dream Cottage in California
Planning a century cottage, equipped with every convenience and in a sustainable manner. Where? Between the Pacific and the mountains of California. Sounds good, right? The study CCS Architecture, Based in San Francisco, has done. The result is this house, consisting of two buildings overlap Corten steel roofs and walls of reclaimed wood look. A new cult claimed rustic relaxation. The plot of 8 hectares, is located about five miles from the Pacific Ocean, overlooking the sea and mountains. The owners, a San Francisco couple with six children, had their priorities, they wanted the building to comply with sustainability criteria to minimize their carbon footprint. The various hobbies and recreational activities that she wanted to develop festivals, cooking, swimming, archery, gardening … – part of their program design. His two structures, the main house and barn, reclaimed wood are coated with Corten steel roofs. In addition, the project consists of some outbuildings and recreational spaces that were designed to fit and form a single enclosure. The main house of 260 square meters, consists of a “living area” and a “space for sleep, which overlap their roofs to strengthen their relationship and create a single space. The main building houses the dining area and kitchen, plus an access stairs to the master suite. The kitchen occupies the central space flanked by the living room and dining room. The spectacular kitchen island measured 5.5 meters long, 7.6 cm thick and consists of a single piece of walnut, with irregular edges, cut a large fallen tree. Several sliding glass doors open the main living abroad, creating an opening overview of 10 meters wide, with a fantastic view. Inside, the atmosphere is casual and rustic, with a combination of concrete floors, wood, stone and steel. The smaller building, with two bedrooms and a shared bath is prepared at an angle and defines a courtyard in a “L”. The barn, meanwhile, has 150 square meters and is designed as a storage area, entertainment and games. Its first floor is reserved for a pin-pong table and a TV area, as well as to store surfboards and other beach equipment. In the attic-loft has installed a pool table surrounded by several sleeper sofas. The interior has been decorated by combining the materials outside the house. The house and barn sit on a sloping meadow surrounded by redwoods and overlooking the sea. All play areas are arranged around the outside of the house and barn. The pool is located below the main house with a fireplace on one side. A shooting range is above the house, and a well is between the house and barn. Two cabins located among the redwoods, serve as guest houses, and also have a sauna attached.
